Title: Director of Major Gifts

Reports to: Vice President, Institutional Advancement
Primary Purpose: Ave Maria University's Director of Major Gifts will design and execute new and innovative strategies that focus on major gifts to Ave Maria University. He/she will cultivate a portfolio of major donors and prospects, supervise and coach a team of gift officers, collaborate with Ave Maria's faculty and staff, and refine systems to track major gift activity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Direct and manage the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift donors including individual, corporate and foundation prospects. Develop short and long-term strategic plans and set goals and objectives. Maintain a portfolio of prospects that support fundraising goals. Develop and sustain strong relationships with University leadership, trustees, donors, alumni, faculty, staff, volunteers, donors, and vendors. Achieve annual and long-term fundraising major gift goals of the University. (55% of time)
Works with the Vice President of Advancement and University leadership to develop and implement fund-raising priorities for the University. (10% of time)
Further develop leadership annual giving offerings of the Mission Society and achieve Mission Gift goals of the University. Utilize Ave Maria's tools for managing donor, prospect, and alumni relationships as resources for planning and managing and monitoring activities. Refine and implement systems to track strategic moves related to major gifts. (10% of time)
Supervise and mentor a team of fundraisers and manage the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and receipt of major gifts. (25% of time)
Education: Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum of five to seven years' experience in non-profit fundraising, preferably in higher education and/or Catholic networks. Previous experience interacting with high net worth donors or other clients is required.
Licensure: Valid Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Demonstrates ability to develop relationships with high net worth individuals and effectively ask and close on gifts at the six- and seven-figure level
Serves as a mentor, leads by example, motivates and effectively manages staff
Develops and implements stewardship strategies with major donors
Shows exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to appropriately manage sensitive and confidential information
Outstanding project management skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
Prioritizes and manages multiple, diverse, and on-going projuects
Performs high-level tasks and provides support to the Vice President for Advancement, as needed
Works proficiently with Microsoft Office products and complex donor databases like Raiser's Edge
Demonstrates excellent analytical, writing and communication skills
Works with a high degree of organization and attention to detail
Agrees to a flexible work schedule with frequent travel, evening and occasional weekend work
Expresses a commitment to the mission and values of Ave Maria University and Catholic higher education
Physical Skills and Abilities:
Requires ordinary ambulatory skills such as the ability to stand, walk, lift, carry, and move light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds, sufficient to travel via car and airline carrier to visit potential donors. Requires the ability to hear and speak in order to communicate with staff, donors, prospects, etc. Requies ability to be seated for prolonged periods, good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment, and read technical information.
Working Conditions: Work is performored primarily indoors. Requires the ability and willingess to travel.
